Search for the Afghan Girl, 2008 -

An indexical project formed around the 1984 Steve McCurry portrait of Sharbat Gula, who is best known as the "Afghan Girl." That iconic photograph offered me opportunities to unveil a broader narrative pertaining to orientalism, suffering, beauty, and individuality. I have mimed the language of fashion photography, Dada, the Neue Sachlichkeit, among other visual systems in search of the Afghan Girl.

Art Workers, 2003/2004

As an art gallery employee, I sometimes stayed afterhours to photograph various exhibition spaces. I used this project as an inquiry of manual labor, artistic labor, and exhibitionality. I discuss this project in detail elsewhere in this site.

Fulton Fish Market, 2005

This series of documentary images was made in the last days of the Fulton Fish Market. The resulting photographs are an exploration of the interior spaces and bodies of the market. The Fulton Fishmarket re-located to Hunts Point in the Bronx in 2005, effectively ending Manhattan's history as a fishing port. At about the same time, The Bodies Exhibition opened next door to the site of the Fish Market, where it remains.
